On my last visit earlier this month, I gave a new look to the patio seating. Florida’s weather is known to anyone who has lived there. Winters are mild and sunny, springs are perfect, summers can be hot and humid and the fall is awash with rain. I did not want to do this project during high humidity and heat, so I scheduled it for the right time of the year. I gave this corner of the patio a facelift when temperatures were in mid-70s.
Last year, I wrote about pale stone landscape design in anticipation of this type of renovation. This type of low-maintenance rock bed with tropical plants is common in our area. They also compliment the style of our older house so I refreshed the sitting area landscaping.
You can see that the patio was not very exciting when I first started. The patio was painted a shade of cornflower-blue before, and I didn’t care for it.
It was necessary to remove the old rocks and replace them with new ones. With a wheelbarrow and a shovel, I was able remove the old blackened blocks and dingy rocks.
We brought in sand after 95% of the rock had been removed to support the new pavers of 24″ I purchased for three potted plants that would fill the space. I covered the landscape sheeting with extra sand, hoping it would hold in place.
We purchased 15 bags of rock white from Lowe’s to layer over the sand. This gave the patio a more modern look. The final step of the transformation was painting the patio. After power washing it, I used a cleaning product to scrub the surface.
I let the patio dry for 24 hours before painting it with Valspar Porch & Patio Paint in Beach Dune. The edges were painted first, then I used a roller mounted on a pole to paint the whole patio. I used a gallon of paint for each coat, allowing the paint to dry completely between coats.
The new patio is amazing. It’s where I have my coffee every morning. 🙂
The only thing we have now is two vintage patio chairs, a table and a table. I will be looking for an outdoor couch set to finish the space.
Since it’s obvious to me that it needs more, I’m thinking of painting a pattern onto the patio rather than using outdoor rugs. This summer, we will be making more progress in this area!
Are you looking forward to spending more time outside in the warmer weather? Spring is fast approaching, it’s time to get planning!
