As part of my design plan for my study-turned-library space makeover, I selected this floral wallpaper as part of its aesthetic scheme. I wanted our library to have just a hint of old world charm since most furnishings belong to modern times.
As I became older, I gained more appreciation for floral patterns of the past which seemed dusty to me. With age comes more appreciation of those motifs and an age when people enjoyed books, music, and art as entertainment – I find myself spending longer at art museums and perusing books on natural history than before. Recently when my mother-in-law asked what to do with her old set of leather bound encyclopedias from when we relied more heavily on books for information than on the Internet.
Victorian florals have found renewed attention since vintage art’s recent surge, wall murals’ comeback and last year’s academia trend, and this year’s academia trend. People seem to want a taste of history in their homes; we crave something that blends 19th-century charm with contemporary lines. A simple way to achieve the look is adding wallpaper, art or home accents featuring Victorian botanical motifs while keeping all other furniture and lighting modernized; here are a few examples below.
