I have been busy preparing my new art studio to be both a public display area and a combined office. I am creating a series art arrangements to inspire me and I began with art ledges. I have written about contemporary looks for art shelves in the past, but this time I took the chance to create my own arrangement.
While researching the topic again, I discovered that wall shelves designed by professionals for showcasing products used similar techniques. Some strategies are used to create an attractive arrangement using a combination five elements.
1. Framed photographs or art. The frames can be leaning or hanging. They are useful because they take up vertical space. However, art can be a great way to personalize and showcase your style. Art and photographs can add color as well as style to a room (vintage or botanical).
2. Books. They are stacked vertically as well as horizontally on the deeper shelves. Bookcases and wall shelves are better for stacking than shallow art ledges. The books are heavier, so they can be used to provide contrast for lighter colors elsewhere.
3. Decorative items in different shapes. Adding objects with texture, sheen and curves to the square or rectangular books and artwork keeps it interesting.

4. Natural organic elements. The easiest way to liven up shelves is with plants, but you can also use sculptural objects like shells, fibrous or textured stones, or wavy ceramics.
5. Negative Space. It’s important not to display too many items and to give the eye space to rest.
This arrangement was created with black art ledges and four of the five elements.
